Fostering A Flexible Space For Kids With Learning Challenges

West Family School is a therapeutic micro school located on three acres in Milton, Ga., serving students with intellectual disabilities.

We believe every child can learn with the right instructional, environmental, and therapeutic support.

Our experienced speech-language pathologist and occupational therapist combine their clinical knowledge and teaching skills to give students an ideal learning experience.

Tailored Educational Plans

We create personalized educational plans to meet the needs of each child, focusing on their strengths and areas of growth. We incorporate components from various research-based curriculums to provide a structured yet flexible approach to learning and ensure each student is challenged within their ability.

Low staff-student ratio

We consider ourselves a micro-school and cap our student-to-teacher ratio at 4:2 to give each child the individualized instruction they need.

Our Staff

Katie Silakowski Expand

Ms. Katie is a licensed and registered occupational therapist. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in health sciences with a minor in special education and her Master’s in occupational therapy from James Madison University in Virginia. She has been practicing for over 12 years with experience in acute care, rehab focusing on adults with developmental disabilities, and pediatric private practice including home health and school settings.

Ms. Katie has completed professional development in Zones of Regulation, Astronaut Training, praxis/motor planning, visual perception, fine motor development, handwriting skills, reflex integration, and executive functioning. She is Orton Gillingham and Handwriting without Tears trained. Ms. Katie strongly believes in a child's holistic development, recognizing that learning and emotional well-being are deeply interconnected.

Outside of school, Ms. Katie enjoys spending time outdoors with her family. She enjoys hiking and running.

Ansley Thomas Expand

Ms. Ansley is an ASHA-certified and Georgia-licensed speech-language pathologist with 15 years of experience. She received her bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders with a minor in education from the University of Florida and a master’s in communication sciences and disorders from the University of Georgia.

Ms. Ansley has worked in outpatient clinical and school settings with children with a variety of disorders, such as autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, hearing impairment, learning disabilities, developmental delays, ADD/ADHD, Apraxia of speech, and Phonological disorders. She is trained in Orton Gillingham, the Kaufman speech praxis method, and the Beckman oral motor assessment/intervention. She is also a certified AutPlay therapist.

Ms. Ansley believes students learn best when they feel personally connected to what they are learning. She fosters connections by incorporating students’ interests into learning, using relevant materials, and providing students with opportunities for real-world application.

An Atlanta native, Ms. Ansley enjoys running, playing soccer, and spending time outdoors with her husband and four children.
